I now need the slot number so I can access the PKCS-11 functions such as C_GetSlotInfo.

Is there a way to map one to the other? Or is there a better way to do what I am trying to do?

You could try using C_WaitForSlotEvent() assuming your PKCS#11 module implements it. It won't tell you if a card as inserted or removed only that an event happened on the slotid that it returns. You can then use C_GetSlotInfo to determine if the device is present or not (don't try and cache this info yourself though).
