Perhaps the "Flags" info available from ioreg may be of some relevance
for Mark's purpose:
ioreg -w 0 -n battery | grep -A 3 '+-o battery'
In my case, and at this precise moment, Flags has value 1090519045 on
AC, and 4 when running on battery.
