Re: How to mount a volume?

If an external drive (firewire in this specific case) has been unmounted, you can mount it with disk utility. It shows up in the left panel, and you can then click on the "Mount" button or use the Mount command in the File menu (or its keyboard shortcut) to mount it.

Is it possible to mount it with an Applescript?

Yes, at least with the help of a shell command.
"diskutil" should be the easiest one, as it takes care of a lot of details.
You could parse the output of "diskutil -list", so as to fetch the corresponding device name; for example: disk1s3.
The unmounted volume may the be re-mounted with "diskutil mount disk1s3".
