Will definitely confuse non Unicode-savvy parsers, but I suppose that most Unicode-savvy parsers will handle gracefully the BOM.
As an example, I think that Smile (which includes many things including a XML parser) writes the BOM if you change a UTF-8 file where it first detected the BOM when opening.
yes but smile is applescript and applescript and utf-8....
