I didn't realize that Applescript did everything in Unicode - although
it *does* make sense.

The target encoding I am aiming for is iso-8859-1.  I tried adding "as
iso-8859-1", but that didn't work, but at least I now know what the
problem is.

Thomas, try keeping the whole shooting match in Unicode text. Remove
the 'as string' coercions...

... replacing the statements with something like:

set {name:current_song, artist:current_artist} to current track
----------------

Then try to open the file using Unicode (UTF-16) encoding - or to
read it with:

----------------
read file file_location as Unicode text
----------------
