iCal alarm to copy event to to-do

I am interested in writing a script to be triggered by an iCal event to copy that event to a new to-do item. I took a look at Apple's script documentation, but I don't see a good way to get started. There is information on the script language, and you can look up iCal actions and events through the Script Editor's dictionary function. That leaves a lot unanswered, such as how does a script triggered by an event alarm refer to the event that triggered it? Do I make a new to-do by puzzling out the necessary script statements to create a to- do and then copy the elements one by one from the event to the task, or is there a better way?

Any information would be appreciated.

(The actual problem I would like to solve is to create to-do items that recur and that do not appear in the to-do list before a set start date. iCal has only completion dates for to-do items, so each to-do appears in iCal's list, even if its completion date is in the far future. My plan is to create recurring events whose alarms will add each event to the to-do list on its start date.)
