Could you please tell me how to detect current local language ID with Shell script?

set foo to do shell script "defaults read 'Apple Global Domain' 'AppleLocale'"
--> "en_GB"

I won't be specific here, I just vaguely remember that under some circumstances this line may return an empty string, which implies that you're "en" or "en_US", I don't know. That's why I would write, in addition:

if foo is "" then set foo to "en"
