According to the reports I've read, the bundled price is the only
price.  Jobs didn't want to let the carriers subsidize the cost to the
consumer.

If I understand you correctly then the $499/$599 prices are equivalent to the prices you'd pay for a phone at Cingular if you just walked in and bought one sans-contract? Or are they more like pre-subsidized prices? The only purpose (to the consumer) for the 2- year agreement (or 1-year) w/ Cingular is to lower the price of the phone. So it'll be a bit of a tough pill for me to swallow if they start to expect me to pay full price for a phone AND sign another contract. They'd better display a jawdropping price in small print on the price card for "price without contract."
