Problem accessing Mail

I am trying to build a script that will allow me to get data from a selected message in Mail.app. I thought I was scripting in an approved way,  but the script will not respond to the "on perform mail action with messages AllMessages". This script application is in the script menu and does run because the Display dialog "End of Script" does work if the Display dialog testMessage is taken out.


using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages allMessages
display dialog "In On"
set testMessage to "In the on"
end perform mail action with messages
end using terms from
display dialog testMessage
display dialog "End of Script"
