Textedit and word counting

I am trying to use a simple little Textedit script to count the number of words in text documents so they can be posted. This script works most of the time but it will eventually start to return the same number. I am not sure how to clear the memory so it will generate the right number. The way it is being used is to copy the content out of an email, into a text document, run the script and repeat. Can anyone see why this eventually gets clogged up?
