Time Machine doesn't mount my external drives.
If they're not mounted (but attached and powered), the backup does not occur
for that hour.

YMMV.

And, since this is marked OT...

I'm actually glad that TM doesn't mount the drive, because that's the only
way I know to keep TM from making hourly backups. I would hope that a
future version of the TM software will allow the user to determine the
frequency, since I find that an hour is ridiculously too frequent. That may
be perfect for a networked office or a SOHO, but for my primary needs, I
just want 1 (or 2) a day...or maybe every 3 hours if I'm writing something
long. Point is, I should get to decide. [Is there a defaults.write
setting?...hmmm.]

I just unmount the drive so TM will stop its work (which *really* slows
things down, even though it only last for a handful of minutes per hour.)
