My apologies to Ed; that was uncalled-for.

I maintain, however, that the myriad problems with this thread have little to do with AppleScript vs shell, and everything to do with attitude and simple politeness.

So please indulge me in a few observations before I shut the heck up about all of this, with the understanding that I am by no means excluding or excusing myself from them:

OS X may be based on UNIX, with all the goodies that implies, but you can't, in general, assume that someone on an AppleScript list has enough knowledge of the UNIX command-line to recognize when a line of code given by itself *is* a shell command.   It's even siller to expect them to know what the heck a "mount point" is, when that term is not generally used in Mac OS land (who needs a "mount point" when mounted volumes just appear on the desktop?).

On the other hand, when the OP demonstrates, or has demonstrated in the past, sufficient knowledge of UNIX to understand what you're talking about, it's OK to take shortcuts in the reply.  But it's also OK for someone to ask for more clarification.  Belittling someone for asking for more help is, as far as I can tell, as contrary to the spirit of the list as can be.  I tried to take a helpful and reasonable tone in my reply to Richard, but rereading it, it still comes off wrong.  So my apologies to him as well.

Notwithstanding any of the above: absent an established teasing relationship, there's just no way that "You didn't try X, did you?"  can come off as anything but condescending and just plain rude.

The whole point of this list is to help people, not to hurt them, or show off how smart we are.  We can do better.
