set theMovie to load movie (choose file)

(choose file) will return an alias. 'load movie' takes the name of a movie file in your project's resources, or a POSIX path, which is why the dictionary says 'reference'. (to cover both cases) The ASStudio Terminology Reference says:

If a movie is not part of your project, you can load it by specifying a POSIX path to the movie file.  (& Example).

So:

set theMovie to POSIX path of (choose file)

Or use the open panel.
