,DS_Store files are the equivalent of the desktop folder in Classic OS. They keep track of such things as your chosen display type for the window and the arrangement of icons. Probably also the position of the window in the graphicsworld of screen space.

What bugs me is that, when you make up a CD-ROM after carefully positioning all of the finder windows representing the folders on the disk, OS neXt ignores it all and displays whatever it feels like.

Ditto for a carefully arranged find-by-content index created in OS 9 and carefully saved to the CD-ROM that it applies to.  Ignored in OS neXt and not possible to create the same index using the likes of SpotLight or the 10.3 equivalent.

So. You can kill the .DS_Store files. But they WILL come back.
