Re: OT: formal prefixes

I'll let Yvan Koenig answer that, but I do know that it German it is
both. When a woman gets married, she ceases to become "frauline" and
becomes "frau", but when she reaches a "certain age", she becomes
"frau" regardless of her marital status.

Since we seem to be observing International Pedantry Day today on the list, I'll jump in and point out that the spelling is actually „Fraulein", and it should be so capitalized (along with all German nouns).

It does seem to be the case that at some point you outgrow being a
„Fraulein" or a «señorita» or a «mademoiselle». Even in English, at
some point you stop being a "Miss" and start being a "Ma'am" as far as
direct address goes. But it's never correct to refer to an unmarried
woman as "Mrs.".

Like I said, stick with "Ms." and apart from the occasional huff,
you'll be fine. :)
