Others have addressed your problem, but I'm curious as to why you  

didn't do it like this:


set the list to files of folder hold_folder as alias list


Are there any other kinds of items in a folder other than files and  

folders?


Not that I can think of. Isn't everything either a file or a folder?
The reason I did it the way I did is that was how it was done when I wrote
the basics of this script under OS 7, OS 8 and OS 9, and I haven't changed
it much. 

99% of the time, there are at least two files in the folder when I
run the script, so on those few occasions when there is only one file,
I usually handled it manually.  I finally decided I wanted to know how
to fix it.

I don't script very often, so a lot of what I do is from examples I've pulled
from others and from poking around in archives of questions answered
here.
