Mac OS X Server from Apple Mailbox

Earlier in the year, my user group, AUSOM, purchased a few of the Apple Mailboxes. One of them contained Mac OS X Server 10.3 and we thought great we could upgrade our "new" Xserve from Mac OS X Server 10.2 (which it shipped with) to 10.3 (from the Mailbox) and we commenced trials of various things on the machine with this version and all worked.

Now we are preparing to actually go live and install the Xserve with all the proper software, starting with a fresh install, but upon entering the serial number we are informed that it has expired.

I don't recall reading anything about it been a time limited version. Is this supposed to happen???

If needed, we will go out and purchase a 10-user licence of Mac OS X Server 10.3 but with Tiger just around corner, if we didn't have to spend nearly AUD$1,000 now we would obviously like to save that money and then look at Tiger Server when it ships in the first half of 2005.
