binary data in stdin/stdout for custom script action

Hi,

I'm relatively new to writing actions, and have run across a significant barrier. It appears that although I can pipe 2 scripts together in the Terminal using binary data as stdout -> stdin, if I in turn run the 2 scripts as Automator actions, they don't work.

If I switch to a pure (ASCII) string output/input, the Action works fine.

I note that custom script actions use "com.apple.cocoa.string" as AMAccepts and AMProvides. While I'm not a Cocoa programmer, my guess is that this data type is not safe to embedded '0's in strings, ie pure binary data. I've tried changing the AMAccepts/AMProvides to alternate data types like "public.data" but the changes appear to not have any effect.

So, do I have to switch to a compiled action to push binary data thru the pipes? Or do I have to wait for Apple to update Automator to allow binary data from customs scripts?

Thanks
Bob Tolbert
