Re: mDns Design query

Hi Ramesh,

Iam working for a company thats developing
Bonjour enabled devices. We have already developed a
Responder application that has passed the automated
tests. We are yet to develop mDNS client utility.

Our plan is to have two different library/applications
for the Responder & client, the logic being that an
embedded device will not need both of them in most
cases. The Response caching will only be done by the
client application.

But, We have seen that the mDNSResponder makes use of
a cache. Is it necessary for a responder to maintain a
cache? Or Is there anything wrong with our approach?

For the client application, you'll need to have a cache in order to implement known answer suppression. You will also need a cache in order to keep track of when records should be expired, so that ongoing queries can be told when records are no longer valid.

Hope that helps.
-Marc
