Re: bonjour connectivity stops

That's a good thought.  I may be the bridge from the hardwired to the wireless sections.  I have a Belkin router at the moment [also worthless but I don't know a consumer one that is :)].  Another thing I can try when it stops is to link directly directly to the iMac via an Airport sharing as see if things are OK that way while still munged up through the router.  I'll let you know when it happens again.

FYI I don't have the firewall turned on.

What kind of routing devices are sitting on your network? For example,  my Linksys [see: worthless] router still provides NAT functionality, and while I don't have a "firewall" per se turned on, it still filters multicast requests through the device (not on the local LAN, but from the WAN->LAN). Which could be where things are getting munged in your setup.

Maybe a few more details as to the devices sitting in between points on your network. I don't think that the issue is so much that "connectivity stops" I think somewhere along the line multicast traffic isn't being passed around as much as it should. Like I mentioned earlier, try the dns-sd(1) "workaround" (actively browsing for services) next time it crops up to see if that is the actual issue here.

Hope you find the issue soon, I'm sure it's irritating :)
