Is there any recommended way to force a user to log out?

"Recommended", I don't know....

But for a kiosk app, we force the logout by killing the loginwindow process.
Of course, this stops the session at once. No way for the running app to do anything.

Yes, this is not a clean way to logout, but depending on what you're trying to achieve, it might be what you're looking for.

Hope this helps,
Jérome

I'm also looking at something like this. There's around 30 Macs in an academic institution that I would like to control their usage in this way (a five minute warning then a forced logout in my case). This would also mean controlling logins - what would be the best way to replace Apple's standard login dialog?
This very much is akin to an internet cafe situation - there's lots of software to do this on PC's, but I haven't seen any Mac ones yet.
