Panther broke support for honoring the value set in Mac OS 9, so I took the source for the keyboard driver (AppleADBKeyboard) from Darwin and made a simple change to invert the check for the fn key. One of the nice advantages of an open source kernel.

There is a function to the effect of setFnKeyMode and I just modified that function to ignore its argument and always set it to 1.

There is software out there that will do it. I can't remember the name, but it is the same program that lets you make modifications to how the track pad works. I decided to play it safe and use a simple driver update I compiled myself rather than something that hooked its way into the OS in multiple ways.

I tried making an installer for it, but when a friend tried it it didn't work, so I never bothered trying to figure out what was going on since I didn't have access to another PowerBook.
