Re: Interface Builder problem

In IB, at least in the one that shipped with Tiger, you can select the

WINDOW, and bring up the Inspector to the Window section (cmd-2), and

drag controls around in the list to set the tab order.

You can do this in Panther too, but as you point out it's not so easy to use

when items don't have signatures. Or, if you don't always remember

immediately the relationship between the signatures and how the items are

laid out in the window.

Yes, with controls that issue commands I have no need for signatures, and hence the window item list is a good start in the right direction, but only that. Add the command info (and more) to the window item list and its another step down the right path.

There are some issues with this inspector (that I've written up), like

if you have multiple controls without signatures, you can't tell them apart.

But you can double-click on any one in the inspector to select it in the

window.  Overall, it's way less of a pain than selecting each item and

doing Bring to Front, IMHO..

I disagree. How many items are you typically arranging in a window?

If you double click them in the window item list, they become selected and the window item list disappears and is replaced with the items info. When I switch back to the window item list, I forget where I was.

Powerplant's Constructor has multiple info panels, and a nice thumb tack that stopped an info panel from changing, superbly useful.

(or even cmd-clicking each item in order in

ResEdit dialogs.. uggggh)

I'm not sure why you say ugh. Command-clicking them in the desired order is

the easiest approach one could ask. Certainly easier than trying to remember

where three dozen controls lie with respect to one another by looking at

their signatures in a list and then dragging them around in that list.

Yes, command-clicking works for me.  Though when I have items overlapped by other items, clicking on the obscured ones is a challenge :).

I have an instance where I obscure a panel with a graphic saying 'Not available in unlicensed mode', and I remove the picture to allow the user to get to the controls. A specialized case I admit.
