how to determine if a character really exists?

If you are using ATSUI to draw characters, you send it various arrays of unicode chars. How do you know if a character really exists in a given font? I am sick of seeing the hollow boxes in the screen, and would like to replace them with a more meaningful character like a funny question mark, but i need to determine before I draw a character if it exists.

I tried calling the measurements, but it always seems to return values (of the missing character),

Adobe InDesign shows a nice character table of available characters for every font. What is the fastest way do determine if a char exists?
