Text antialiasing (smoothing)

Does anyone know if there is a way to override the "Turn off text smoothing
for font sizes 'x' and smaller" in the Appearance System Prefs panel within
the drawing context of my own applications?

The reason I ask is that as we have been moving to CG/ATSUI text, we have
enabled antialiasing for the UI text in our app. Some of this text is
smaller than 12 pt. When antialiased, it looks good and is readable. When
not antialiased, the spacing is funny and it is hard to read.

When we were using QD, we were careful to work with fonts that looked good
without antialiasing.

The problem we have run into is that some users report that they want the
setting in the System prefs panel to be 12 for some of the other apps they
use.

I would like to be able to tell the system to draw my text antialiased.

Any ways to accomplish this?

BTW calls to the API:
        SetAntiAliasedTextEnabled(true, 3);

are ignored.

TIA,
