Thanks, I had tried that but Autoflush was being turned as well even
though I did not want it on.
Curiously, and somewhat typically, it now works as advertised. %).
(I have now discovered that deleting the prefs provokes the former
behavior. My OS is freshly installed so that explains why. Having now
interacted with the checkboxes the behavior is as expected)

off the 'Flash screen updates' around every launch, so much so
that switching to Quartz Debug is becoming tiresome.
It is equally tiresome that the required window in Quartz Debug is
a palette that hides in the background.
I have already looked to see if Quartz Debug is scriptable (no).
If no Carbon api, a Cocoa one will do!
