Resource forks at File/rsrc

Since OS X was introduced, it has been possible to open a file's resource fork with the Posix layer by calling open( "filename/ rsrc", ... ).
I know this is used by many apps (i.e. the Mac OS X port of rsync) and I don't know of any other way to get to the resource fork without involving the Carbon File Manager.
Is this sanctioned by Apple? Would it be safe to write code which relies on this? We have a lot of existing file code which works well on both Linux and Mac OS, and I just want to copy a resource fork from point A to point B (on the Mac only, of course) without including a whole separate file API. _______________________________________________
