i don't want to shove anything up any butts, believe me. but i think you're missing a fourth world: cross-platform SDL-using apps which don't depend on X11, and don't depend on Aqua, but do present a significant graphical experience, and do require 'normalish' app paradigms such as argv. i know many game systems, for example, using this model to approach Windows/OSX/Unix cross-platform nirvana ..
