I wouldn't recommend a prefs window for this, but to answer your latest "I
don't understand Mac OS X" question, it's not uncommon for applications to
have preferences that only take effect when the application is launched.
They usually tell the user something like "Changes will take effect the next
time X is launched."

There may be Unix GUI applications, but I've never known anyone who
considers himself a Unix user who didn't have an intimate personal
relationship with Terminal. ;-)
