RE: File/Folder icons - normal and custom

And is there any way to do the same without adding an icon resource to the file? What about folders/packages?

Does the overrideIconRef function actually changes the file's default icon??

Say I have an FSRef or FSSpec to some .txt file. I then get an IconRef for this text file, and use OverrideIconRef to override it with my custom icon. If I then open the finder and look at the folder containing my .txt, will it appear with the icon I used in the override function?

Whoops, in my enthusiasm to help you I might have pointed you the wrong direction.

Laurence Harris pointed out (in <http://lists.apple.com/archives/carbon-development/2003/Jun/msg00825.html>) that OverrideIconRef changes the icon used for *all items* with the icon corresponding to that IconRef.

If your files can handle resource forks, you can add the IconFamilyHandle to your file as an 'icns' resource with the correct ID (-16455) via AddResource().
