Re: Is Carbon Viable?

That hasn't always been the official description. If that were the case then why have an announcement at last year's WWDC that Carbon would get 64-bit support? Why introduce an all new interface model (HIView) in the third major release of Mac OS X? Why would people want to abuse themselves carbonizing an old application just to have to redo it all again later in Cocoa?

Exactly my standpoint too. I wouldn't be pissed if there had be a WWDC 04 announcement like "Carbon is frozen, it will be put on life support for the next three releases but no new features will ever be added. We really really want you to be 100% Cocoa by 10.5." - that would have been fine. But constant reassurances that "Carbon is a 1st class citizen" and "upgrade to the new HIViews and you'll be able to tap into all the cool stuff we'll do in future releases" definitely were the wrong signal. It made a lot of developers waste their time upgrading to "modern Carbon".
