What about: FSGetCatalogInfoBulk to obtain the filename, followed by a LSGetExtensionInfo to get the index in the FileName Unicode Array of where the extension starts. Then a string comaparison between "mpeg" and your extension.
to create the the file, FSCreaetfileUnicode.
hope that helps, Not sure this is the best way, but it works for me.
