Finder icon badging?

I was interested in trying out Finder icon badging, and I remembered from my Mac OS 8 days that the Finder allowed for that. So I dug around, and found http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/Icon_Service_nd_Utilities/03tasks/chapter_3_section_3.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40000916-3-TPXREF117 . However, when I hacked together a quick test, it didn't seem to work.

Is this still a usable API? Is there a better (or any) way of doing this?
