Re: OT: Why can I not use Time Machine with AEBS, or other NAS?

I just read through this hack, and although the disk shows up, they say it does not work. I would think anyone here would be sensible enough not to use an unsupported approach for something as important as a backup.

As the AEBS is the logical place to attach a 500GB disk for backup for the whole family, lets hope they resolve this issue soon. File suggestions through bug reporter to let them know how much you want it.

There are a whole heap of things Apple are rushing to market and should be fixing later, things like extending the AppleTV storage via it's USB port (and even using that for Time Machine or docking my iPod), making the iPhone work as a connected device over bluetooth for syncing and SMS for example.

I get frustrated by them not making their own keynotes and special presentations available as free movies on iTunes, so I can watch them on my AppleTV, iPod and iPhone, and that is a real simple thing to fix.

A workaround for this has been published on the internet though I don't know if it will work for you but you can check it out at http://www.9to5mac.com/time-machine-hacked-to-work-on-smb-2345654 This of course is not official and not guaranteed to work nor is it guaranteed not to mess anything up but it's worth a shot to see if it really works as advertised...

It's explicitly stated that you can't use Time Machine to back up to a drive connected to the Airport Base station, but, in typical Apple fashion, it doesn't explain why, nor does it suggest that there is an update forthcoming to allow this.

I bought the AEBS specifically for this purpose. Anyone have any insight?

I have no idea, but thanks for mentioning it. I was considering doing the same thing and it does seem like an obvious thing to do. In my experience new features like this are minimally useful in their initial release, as if Apple didn't do enough user testing with them. Then in the next major release they add the stuff that makes the feature really useful after getting lots of requests/ complaints. I would like to specify folders to back up, and it seems like something you should be able to do, but that's not an option. You can only tell it folders to *not* back up. I think it would serve most people's needs to only back up their home folders. Time Machine is useless to me if I can't back up to a drive connected to an Airport Base station. Better luck in Mac OS X 10.6 I guess. ;-)
