Getting the 'finder displayed name' for a FSRef

Hi,

We have an interesting 'problem'.
We want to show the name of an FSRef in our UI, but we want to display it in
exactly the same way as the finder displays the name.
This means
- it has to show/hide the extension based on the setting (per file) which is
stored somewhere (by the way, where is it ?), and the preference set in
the finder to 'always show all extensions' (btw, where is the list of
extensions which is always hidden, like .app or .localized)
- it has to do the localization based on the .localized stuff etc.

Also, where (and how) is it controlled if the extension should be
hidden/shown for a newly created file, when the file is not created using a
standard file browser ?

At first sight we did not find a call on an FSRef object that returns a
Unicode string 'as the finder would display it'

Frank
