Thanks. I'm now just "passing thru" my document icon for all thumbnails. This restores the document icon for small views in the Finder [altho there are some background or alpha issues - the icon is a non-square, document-aspect ratio rectangle floating in clear (zero alpha white), but seems to be imaged by the Finder in a square rect floating in smutz].
It's not clear from the QuickLook doc precisely which clients ask for thumbnails and which ask for previews. I can guess, but it would be nice to know for sure.
