I know how to use NavCreateChooseFolderDialog to get a folder and

FSSpecs have been deprecated for a long time. You should be
working with FSRefs at this point.
I don't even know how to get started updating my file-handling
skills. Do FSRefs work with the Nav routines, which seem to
operate on FSSpecs,
FSRefs have been supported by Nav Services since they were introduced
in Mac OS 9.1 or 9.2.
or do I have to use a completely different set of routines for
presenting file opening/saving dialogs?
and select File Management, I don't see a single over-arching
"here's how to start learning the new nondeprecated methods"
documentation. What I do see, third in the list, is the link to
the Nav routines, without a deprecation message, which teaches file
management using FSSpecs, as I showed above.
Apple's Carbon documentation has always been terrible (some bits are
very good, but there's pathetically little of it, and no really good
comprehensive documentation for someone "getting started"), and with
Carbon officially put on the path to obsolescence, it would be naive
to think that will change.
