If you use a common naming scheme such as we do, you can import a list
of computers into WGM then run a unix script that will scrub the
computer names, and re-create the lists without ruining the MCX setting
for that list.
Our naming convention goes like this...
Building initials - Room number - Computer number or TS for teacher
station.
So, Lower Merion room b203 computers 1-20 and a teacher station would
be...
Lm-b203-01 lm-b203-02...lm-b203-ts
The script then takes the first 2 parts of the computer name (Which is
common to all the computers in that room) and makes a list name from
that and populates it with all the computers that match...
List name in this case would be lm-b203
This only works if you name ALL your machines in this fasion and want
lists broken down by physical location.
Laptops are basically just a list with only one name in it...
Da-perbix-lap
Creates a list da-perbix with that single machine in it.
If you run this utility wither as a cron job or on demand, it will scrub
your computers and make sure the lists are accurate.

The fix Neal mentioned was what I have had to do as well. There is a
long thread on this problem in the Apple discussion forums. This is a
very annoying bug that I hope is fixed in the next rev of workgroup
manager.

In WGM, use the 'inspector' pane to access the computer list in
question.... and delete it from there.
I have had this happen as well... and this worked every time for me.
