I put in a case on this with AppleCare awhile back. They came back
and said it was a "known issue" that would be resolved in a future
release. They were unable to specify whether that future release was
10.4.9 or 10.5, however.

It is beginning to happen to me in half of my schools, and the only
fix so far seems to be logging out and logging back in. I would be
interested to see if this is happening to anyone else, and if so,
what solutions you have come up with.
