Re: Pushing out new printer information

I've recently added a new Canon mfp to our network and I'm trying to
push out (using ARD) the printer and the printer configuration to the
clients. I've found the PPD file located in /Library/Printers/PPDs/
Contents/Resources/en.lproj and have successfully pushed the
respective file to all the clients. However when I look at the
clients the Installable Options pane under the printer info doesn't
reflect the settings on the server (I'm managing the queues on an
Xserve). I've tried modifying the PPD to reflect the correct printer
options, however that isn't working either.

Is there another preference file that I'm missing somewhere that
needs to be pushed?

Especially with multifunction devices, there are often more files installed
than just the PPD. You should use a tool like logGen to find all the files
that make up the printer driver.

Many installers do leave a log file sitting somewhere on your HD; running
the driver installer again and looking for logs on your desktop, and the
root level of the HD, might provide the needed answers.

Matt

Right. I've done this for HP printers. What I do is make a package of the hp directory under /Library/Printers. You could tar it too and just expand it on the client machines. I would think this would work for the canon directory too. You don't really have to worry about overwriting, because you're taking a snapshot of the current drivers, unless the client has drivers installed for a personal printer.

So that gets the driver out. I'm assuming you're using 10.4, because printing in 10.3 is totally different. In 10.3 you have to have the printer driver on the client or printing, and most other things, don't work. As far as I can tell in 10.4 the printers are always listed as generic when pushed out via MCX. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hope this helps,
Andy.
