Server Admin Connections

I keep having students that get the message they're already logged in somewhere when they are not.

So I go to Server Admin>AFP> and Connections.  I can usually find them there and disconnect them.  But what I don't understand is why the same student will be listed at least two times - one of those is almost always grey, while the other is black.  And there are often many students listed in grey.  What is the difference in those listed in grey and those listed in black - or why are there any listed in grey?
