| Marcy, I don't know what version of server software you are running but we had that same problem crop up after upgrading to 10.4.8. I cannot comment on the grey and black issue but the listing of the students twice is normal. One entry is for authentication and the other entry is for managed clients with their network shares that mount. If you have an unmanaged client log into the server you will only see one AFP entry and normally these will not hang or cause the problem. We did an upgrade to our switches by adding a gigabit switch for our servers to connect to and then connected each other switch directly from that switch with at least a 100mb connection. I think we had too many hops or links with other smaller switches that caused our problems. Any way after the up date to our switches the problem went away.
