Re: Dock settings in Tiger

Hi Robert,

I noticed the same thing about the question mark. Don't know when this started exactly.

Anyway what I found out: Edit the com.apple.dock.plist file by hand. For any of the persistent-apps there is a title-data->file-data- >_CFURLAliasData just delete this field in your prefs file for each persistent app.

Once that is gone Dock will start up and show the correct icon. Any remaining question marks now should hint of missing applications in the install.

Talking Leopard Dock. I think from a preferences point that is a little different to begin with. It still has the plist file (with the _CFURLAliasData that might be worth deleting). But there is also a com.apple.dock.db file. That is a sqlite3 database, from the contents it looks like it has anything to do with files/folders you put into the dock.

From the MCX simulation point of view: What MCX does is essentially grab the .plist file from the server and copies that over the user prefs based on your management settings (always/once/never) etc. So copying things over manually should do after having it prepared as I said above.

Cheers,
	 René

I image quarterly at 3 different locations, with about 150 Laptops/ Desktops each, and I'm having a slight issue with the Dock.

Since I do not bind to any directory for authentication, I manage all settings locally. To configure the proper dock for the school the laptop is in, I have a post image action that copies a dock.plist that I made into the proper location. It used to work, but now I will usually get a lot of question marks in the dock, and the only way to fix this is to recreate the dock on the proper hardware, and then copy the plist to all the imaged computers.

Since I'm moving to Leopard I would like to know if anyone has had any issues with this, as created each dock on the specific model will not work for me.

Also, is there a way to create the Dock settings through the MCX settings (i.e. WGM) though a terminal command? I would like to do this, as I can then just have the terminal commands run as the post- action. Other than that, is there a file I can copy after manually setting the Dock MCX through WGM to get the target computer to have the correct dock?
