Freezing up at login

For quite a while now we've had a problem that has more or less stumped me. Computers will lock up in the process of logging in. After a bit of experimentation I discovered several things about it.

1. The lockups happen with certain users on certain computers, but those users can log in normally to other computers, and other users can log into that computer
2. re-imaging, or deleting all files from HD/Library/Caches solves the problem for a while
3. The computer crashing with a particular user logged in seems to be the initial cause (or an initial cause) of the problem
4. It's a cumulative effect. Once it starts to happen on a machine it just gets worse

I don't know wether bandwidth or other network issues are contributing factors. But forward and reverse lookup works on the servers, so it's not DNS related. I would love it if someone could tell me how to solve this problem, but barring that can anyone help me identify the specific cachee files that are getting corrupted, and a way to routinely delete them on the local machines so that I can minimize the lockups?
