Software update unable to communicate with server

Title: Software update unable to communicate with server
Greetings all. One of the clients I support (Mac Pro running 10.4.10) is unable to use Software Update via the command line or the GUI. All our clients point to our internal server (Xserve G5 w/ 10.4.11) and all but this client can access it without problems.

When run from the terminal, I get the following:

administrator$ softwareupdate -l
Software Update Tool
Copyright 2002-2005 Apple

2008-01-08 13:10:32.283 softwareupdate[9321] Loading CatalogURL
http://smacx1:8088/index.sucatalog
2008-01-08 13:10:32.636 softwareupdate[9321] loader:didFailWithError:NSError
"can’t connect to host" Domain=NSURLErrorDomain Code=-1004 UserInfo={
    NSErrorFailingURLKey = http://smacx1:8088/index.sucatalog;
    NSErrorFailingURLStringKey = "http://smacx1:8088/index.sucatalog";
    NSLocalizedDescription = "can\U2019t connect to host";
}
can’t connect to host

---

If I curl the same URL (http://smacx1:8088/index.sucatalog) I get the contents of the plist as expected. I have tried removing the CatalogURL pointer, the entire com.apple.SoftwareUpdare.plist file from both /Lib/Prefs and ~/Lib/Prefs but the error persists. I also  repaired permissions and rebooted the client — wishful thinking, I know — to no avail.

I checked the contents of the /Lib/Logs/Software Update.log and the last successful update session logged the following single item:

    2007-10-30 13:23:01 -0400: Installed "Mac Pro EFI Firmware Update" (1.2)

I am at a loss. Any ideas before I try a combo update?
