I understand that, using launchd, I can cause faceless processes to
run at boot, even under the login screen. This method was one that
(for example) allowed people to cleverly script the Screen Saver
process to engage at the login window, even though Apple
(infuriatingly) provide no support of their own for this to occur. I
have used just such a launchd process to launch a command line
version of BOINC to run outside business hours on our lab Macs.
However, all this was under Tiger. I have heard through several lists
and forums that these hacks are not behaving as expected under
Leopard. Significantly, people have been unable to trigger the
Screensaver engine at the login screen using the same "form" of the
script that worked perfectly under Tiger.
Thus, my question is: is anyone aware of any changes in Leopard that
would cause this behavior? I would still like to run BOINC, ideally
as a login-screen screensaver, but by second preference as a daemon
process as I do now.
