Maybe on the OD side of things, but (if I understand him correctly)
the OP is serving up 30 /home directories/ simultaneously from one
drive. During login this is going to put an incredible amount of load
on the drive.
The normal way this load is broken up is with OD
clones though software raid is available and that's suggested around
100
simultaneous logins. Raid stripe would be a terribly risky thing to do

and
mirroring only get's you so far (though it's suppose to be faster
than one
hd by itself.)
yeah, mirroring's more about resilience than speed...
