Questions about NSDistributedNotificationCenter

Got a couple of quick questions about NSDistributedNotificationCenter:

1. Is this the "normal" method of passing simple "messages" between threads?

2. Are the notifications machine local? i.e. Is there no ability to have other machines listen for notifications? That is what I *think* I understand from the documentation.

3. Any caveats that I should know before I start entrenching my code with this object?
