How to backup sources before updating to 10.1 ?

This is may be a little bit off topic, but I think everybody has the same problem....

I have some sources, that I want to backup. I burned the folder containing my sources on a CD (under 9.1 using Toast5).
When I try to open a file (*.h, *.m) under 9.1 (Metrowerks) this is not possible.

Do I have to do chmod or something like that, before burning the CD (I usually program under admin)?

What is the best strategy for saving our work?
