No, of course not! There's never just one way to do something... :)

I would have placed the toolbar delegate in the window controller, if you have such a one - but regardless of the position you shouldn't be limited by where you have access to the instance variable. You should of course use an accessor method! Something like this:

[[myDoc window] setToolbar: toolbar];
